Building sustainable homes

At Wessex Water, we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment.

We offer a range of environmental incentives to encourage sustainable development. These reduce the load on our networks, encourage better water efficiency in the home, help our customers save water, and reduce the risk of sewer flooding.

The incentives are available as credits against water supply and sewerage infrastructure charges, which are payable where a connection to our network is made for the first time; or where an existing property is converted or re-developed.

Further information can be found below, as well as in Section 8 of our Wessex Water New Connection Services Charging Arrangements 2026-27.

Water Environmental Incentive

If you can demonstrate that you are building new premises to use less than 100 litres of water per person per day, you could get a £100.00 credit (per property) off your clean water infrastructure charge.

To demonstrate compliance, you must ensure that the premises are built with fittings not exceeding the maximum consumption rates set out in the table below.

Water fittings Maximum consumption
WC 4 litres full flush / 2.6 litres dual flush
Shower 7 litres per minute
Bath 170 litres total capacity
Basin taps 5 litres per minute
Sink taps 6 litres per minute
Dishwasher 1 litre per place setting
Washing machine 6 litres per kilogram

When using the above table to assess water efficiency, the premises must have a WC, shower and/or bath, basin taps and sink taps water fittings. If more than one of a particular type of fitting is installed, each must comply with the relevant criterion.

The efficiency of dishwashers and washing machines will only be assessed if installed by the developer.

Please refer to the process outlined below for more information on how to apply for the incentive.

Sewerage Environmental Incentive

Sewerage infrastructure charges reflect the cost of the wider network reinforcement that is required to meet the increased demand arising from new foul and surface water connections.

If you can demonstrate that you are managing surface water (rainwater) sustainably, then you could qualify for a credit off your sewerage infrastructure charge.

We offer two tiers of Environmental Incentive (only one of which can be awarded for each property):

Tier 1: £670 credit (per property) for schemes with the inclusion of an agreed SuDS scheme that attenuates the flow of surface water into our existing or proposed network.

Tier 2: £1,206 credit (per property) for schemes that commit to zero surface water discharge into our existing or proposed network.

Water services provided by others

Where water services are provided by a different Water Company (with Wessex being the sewerage provider only), then they will notify us of your development.

We will attempt to contact you once we have received this notification to request information on the drainage arrangements ahead of processing the infrastructure charge invoice. You will have 30 days to respond with this information, otherwise you will not qualify for either of our sewerage environmental incentives. Steps 1 and 2 of the process outlined below will not apply in this scenario, however, you should still refer to steps 3, 4 and 5 for more information on the evidential process.

Water services provided by us

If we are the water supply company for your site (in addition to being the sewerage provider), then please refer to the process outlined below for more information on how to apply for the incentive.
